Looks Arent Everything
FERN will be at Souk el Tayeb from 9am until 3pm with UNHCR, UNESCWA, the Lebanese Food Bank, Cedar Environmental, and other organizations, talking about food waste and methods to reduce food waste at home. They also want to use this event to give the public some insight into global food production, and explain why everything in average supermarkets is usually sparkling and symmetrical - the produce that doesn't make the cut (ie wrong size, wrong color, the list is long) often goes to waste. They with some of the Souk el Tayeb farmers, who will bring fruits and veggies that are cosmetically imperfect, and are therefore not usually brought to the market for sale. The Souk el Tayeb farmers generally make jam or pickles from these items, so their production cycles differ from the supermarket systems mentioned above. Some large supermarket suppliers end up composting these "wonky" (but still perfectly fresh and healthy) items on their land because they don't meet aesthetic standards.they will be using these sometimes unloved sample fruits and veggies to raise awareness about global food production and waste.
