Wadih El Safi Tribute Concert
10 months have passed since we lost him, 10 months since Lebanon buried a legend and we are left with recordings. However, it is up for us to decide whether we want to keep the memories alive. A tribute was paid to Dr. Wadih el Safi in the Waterfront Beirut Holidays on the 13th of August 2014. It was not only to honor his memory, but also for us, listeners, to awaken our senses and enjoy songs that would last a lifetime. Mohamad Kais hosted the event. For him, it was the hardest event to ever host as no words can describe the greatness of "the Immortal Voice of Lebanon." He had a brief but moving introduction; with more than 3000 songs he has sung, Wadih El Safi has managed to communicate through his music with all the Lebanese expatriates, urging them to come back.
Â
He reached the heart of every Lebanese to make them feel like they belong to an amazing country and to enrich their souls with patriotism. In every song, he carried a message and lifted the image of Lebanon to become a "piece of heaven." Sara el Hani and Joseph Attieh were to perform his songs, and what's more moving than his two sons, Georges and Antoine El Safi, those who have been tutored by a legend in music, to perform the amazing songs of Dr. Wadih. Joseph Attieh was speechless, he thanked the audience and mentioned that he was raised listening to those songs, and it's an honor to perform them on this stage. Sara el Hani also expressed how privileged she was to be present in this night. And as for Georges and Antoine El Safi, well, their face expressions were enough gestures. Antoine el Safi's son had the chance to also perform as a violin soloist in "Libnan, ya ot3it sama" to present the entire gifted generation of El Safi. Many celebrities and even expatriates were there in honor of his memory.

Wadih El Safi, 1921 -2013, 91 years of art, 91 years of passion to music and to Lebanon. He lived in Syria for a year and in Brazil for 3 years, but his heart carried him back home. "You have no identity unless you are in your native country." A father of 6 children, Wadih had a vision, in the days when music was a bit neglected; he became a singer, songwriter, composer and actor. Born in Niha, Shouf, he started his musical career when he competed in a singing contest held by a Lebanese Radio and won over forty other competitors. He did not just make history; he brought a new style, a new musical education, a passion. We miss those days, the days of sophisticated music, and the days when you can never get bored of a song or a singer. We are very fortunate to have lived in his days, and hope that we keep on paying tribute to this legend in events to come...
