This Cold War Era Home Is Completely Charming

    08 august 2014
In 1978, wealthy businessman Girard "Jerry" B. Henderson decided to build the house of his dreams. It was full of quaint decorations, busy 70s wallpaper and a kitchen so brightly colored, it could blind you. That's not the best part about this house, though. It's hiding a pretty amazing secret.

Jerry was a little on the paranoid side because of the Cold War, so he outfitted his brand-new house with an extra, hidden section: an underground fallout shelter.

The underground portion of the house was made to resemble a normal, above-ground house and yard. The 15,200-square-foot subterranean section was equipped so that a family could live underground for an entire year (you know, in case of an apocalypse). It might sound crazy, but I will kill to live in this house.

A stairway leading to the secret part of the house is hidden in the yard, as well as an elevator.
Jerry made his money from Avon cosmetics and Gulfstream Aerospace Corp... and he decided to spend it on building a house that could withstand a nuclear blast.
He was so smitten with the idea of living underground (and fearful of the Soviets), he tried to convince others to follow suit.
