Japanese gourmets are being treated to a new dairy dessert - and it's made from gorilla excrement.

Researchers at Kyoto University in Japan have created a type of cheesecake, which is made with bacteria extracted from the animal's faeces.

The unusual food item, which comes in limited quantity, is available at the university's cafe from August 6-8, reported People's Daily Online.

Juichi Yamagiwa, President of the university, presented the new cheesecake at a press conference on August 5.

The unique bacteria used to bake the dessert was originally discovered in Africa where the Japanese researchers studied gorilla faeces.

It usually lives in the intestine of gorillas but can be carried out of the body by excrement.
