The organisers of a music festival in the Lebanese city of Byblos have cancelled an appearance by a rock band accused of blasphemy by local church leaders, citing security concerns.
Here's what Byblos International Festival posted on their social platforms:
"Dear Byblos International Festival fans,
It is with anger and sadness that we had to take the decision to cancel the upcoming Mashrou’ Leila show.
Although impassioned and having worked tirelessly with the competent authorities to ensure the performance of Mashrou’ Leila happens as it has in 2010 and 2016, it is in agreement with the band that we have determined the safety of the artists and concert-goers should remain our number one priority.
Unfortunately, the national debate that ensued as a result of an organized campaign against the band and the Festival goes well beyond the scope of the mission BIF is able to handle.
Byblos International Festival is made up of a committee of multi-confessional and non-politically affiliated citizens who, for the past 17 years, have relied upon the goodwill of the people of Jbeil and all of Lebanon to organize events in this historic city.
The Festival calls upon its supportive community to make its voice heard and demand the Lebanese State acts to ensure that Mashrou’ Leila’s and all other artists’ expression stands as an inalienable right, for freedom is first and foremost freedom from fear.
With love,
BIF Team"
