All I Want For Christmas Is You Thought To Make Mariah Carey More Than 2 Million Dollars A Year

    26 december 2020

Some people love Christmas, some people hate Christmas. The smart money would say Mariah Carey belongs to the love Christmas camp.

This of course because she is the voice behind the festive banger 'All I Want for Christmas Is You'.

The tune has been an ever-present anthem every December since it was released back in 1994, and as such, it continues to rake in the big bucks for the singer.

A 2017 article by The Economist reported that the tune had made $60 million (£44.5m) in royalties since its release, which works out as roughly $2.6 million (£1.9m) a year.

It's unclear if the song has continued to earn Carey cash at the same rate since 2017.

It's ironic, really, given that the whole message of the song is that Mariah doesn't want a lot for Christmas.

Well tough t*ts, Mariah. You are getting a lot for Christmas. Every single Christmas.

And the popularity of the song hasn't diminished in the years since this royalties calculation. Indeed, the tune has topped the UK singles chart for the very first time - so it's getting even more popular, if anything.

In doing so, it broke a record, as no other song has spent more weeks in the Official Chart Top 40 before eventually reaching the number one spot in UK chart history.

The song debuted at number five and peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart when it was first released in 1994.

Since then, the highest the song had reached on the Big Top 40 was number six, back in 2011.
