ByteDance's popular TikTok app has rolled out its first augmented reality (AR) effect that takes full advantage of the LiDAR scanner on the "Pro" models of Apple's iPhone 12.
What Does TikTok’s First LiDAR-Powered Effect Do?
TikTok made the announcement on its official Twitter account, declaring, "To ring in 2021 we released our first augmented reality effect on the new iPhone 12 Pro, using LiDAR technology." The accuracy and speed of the sensor allows TikTok to create effects that "interact with your environment," visually bridging the digital and physical worlds.
In the video embedded in the Tweet above, you can see the new effect in action. The user first goes through a countdown before the explosion fills the room with flying confetti and reflective golden balloons.
Pay close attention to the tight integration between virtual and real objects, with the virtual confetti spreading across the room and landing accurately on the couch and the floor. This wouldn't be possible were it not for the accuracy of the iPhone 12's LiDAR scanner.
