Monopoly Is Getting Rid Of Outdated Community Chest Cards After 85 Years

    21 march 2021

Monopoly will be replacing some its Community Chest cards after 85 years.

Hasbro, the company that makes the board game, announced the news, saying the Community Chest cards are 'overdue a refresh'.

Hasbro is asking fans to vote for their favourites out of a selection of new cards, which will ask players to do things like donate to an animal shelter or volunteer at a local children's hospital, while some of the cards will have penalties for failing to take out the rubbish or not choosing to shop local.

In a statement, Hasbro said: "Covering topics like beauty contests, holiday funds, and life insurance, there is no denying the Monopoly game's Community Chest Cards are long overdue for a refresh.

"And, coming out of the tumultuous year of 2020, the term 'community' has taken on a whole new meaning."

Eric Nyman, Chief Consumer Officer at Hasbro said: "The world has changed a lot since Monopoly became a household name more than 85 years ago, and clearly today community is more important than ever.

"We felt like 2021 was the perfect time to give fans the opportunity to show the world what community means to them through voting on new Community Chest Cards. We're really excited to see what new cards get voted in!"

The game comes in many forms, with even a Home Bargains version available.

The special edition board game is presented in a blue and red box, to represent the Home Bargains logo, with a matching game board.

A description on the Home Bargains' website reads: "Move over Mayfair, Home Bargains is in town!

"This exclusive version of Monopoly by Hasbro features some of Home Bargains most iconic locations, warehouses and our very own online store. Starting off in the very first HB store in Old Swan, Liverpool, you can end up in Pontefract, Rutherglen, Newtownabbey, Harlow or Poole!
