    07 june 2023

The MedArtSal 2nd International Salt Fair commenced yesterday at the Beirut Digital District with a significant inauguration ceremony, marking the beginning of the event. Under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency Mr. Walid Nassar, Minister of Tourism in Lebanon, the fair aims to celebrate sustainable business models in artisanal Salinas of the Mediterranean region while preserving their traditional production methods and biodiversity.

The opening day was filled with enthusiasm and excitement as attendees, highlighted by the presence of the Ambassador of Spain in Lebanon, Mr. Jesús I. Santos Aguado, gathered to witness the grand launch. Distinguished speakers, including Fair Trade Lebanon’s President Mr. Samir Abdelmalak delivered inspiring welcome remarks, emphasizing the importance of the event and the accomplishments of the MedArtSal project. Keynote speeches from representatives of ENI CBC MED, the European Union, and the Ministry of Tourism added to the program's significance.

On its first day in Lebanon, the fair featured engaging sessions covering various topics such as salt production, tourism, gastronomy, cosmetics, and environmental sustainability. Participants had the opportunity to attend workshops, seminars, and plenary sessions, gaining valuable insights and fostering collaboration in the industry. Over 20 salt producers and stakeholders from Spain, Italy, Tunisia, and Lebanon exhibited and showcased their artisanal products, attracting attention and admiration from visitors.

MedArtSal, funded by the European Union under the ENI CBC MED Program, has played a crucial role in defining sustainable management models for artisanal Salinas. Through this project, a marketing strategic plan, biodiversity strategies, an e-commerce platform, capacity building programs, and an international network have been established. The MedArtSal International Salt Fair serves as a platform to showcase the achievements of the project and connect local and international salt producers, fostering innovation and collaboration.

Fair Trade Lebanon, in collaboration with the Association of the Development of Rural capacities (ADR) and the MedArtSal consortium, has been instrumental in organizing this event. As a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting fair trade practices and supporting marginalized communities, Fair Trade Lebanon aims to create sustainable opportunities and improve the livelihoods of local producers. The MedArtSal project is one of their flagship initiatives, demonstrating their commitment to fostering sustainable development.

MedArtSal 2nd International Salt Fair continues today the 8th of June, offering more exciting sessions, networking opportunities, and exhibits, and concludes tomorrow the 9th of June with an immersive visit to Anfeh town. Participants can explore the diverse range of innovative products and services while engaging in meaningful discussions on sustainable practices in the salt industry.
