the Zonta Club of Beirut participated in the 62nd Zonta International Convention that took place in Orlando, Florida in USA during which Lebanon was represented for the first time through the President Mrs Magida Samara and Vice president Mrs .Wafaa Daou of Zonta Club of Beirut.
Zonta Club of Beirut Is the newly chartered Club of Zonta International which works to advance the status of women worldwide, through service and advocacy .ZC of Beirut made Lebanon the 65th country and, the first one in the Arab world, to join Zonta International which was founded in the USA in 1919. . The 62nd Zonta International Convention was under the auspices of Mrs. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, including representatives from the United Nations, Caryl Stern, President and CEO "US Fund For UNICEF, Dr. Marilyn Waring" Professor of Public Policy, Institute of Public Policy at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand", Past International Presidents and other officials, and more than 2500 professional women from around world.
The opening ceremony started with the flags parade where there was 67 colourful flags representing members from countries all around the world. The presence of the Lebanese flag carried by Zonta club of Beirut President was very impressive and special welcomed.
After the international flag ceremony, Zonta International President Lynn McKenzie welcomed Zontians and thanked them for their support in the 2012-2014 Biennium.
Keynote speaker Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, thanked Zontians for their unwavering support of UN Women and its mission, and inspired Zontians to advocate for gender equality.
"Through Zonta's support, we are able to make the world better place for women and girls worldwide," Pumzile said. "We are the generation to make a change, and we must hold ourselves accountable. We have nothing to lose."
Zonta International holds a Convention every two years which serves to exchange ideas and introduce new cultures of all over the world in order to implement service and advocacy achievements at the international, district and club levels.
It's worth to be noticed that Zonta International selected the International projects among proposals from UN Agencies with focus on root causes:
o Eliminating Obstetric Fistula in Liberia with UNFPA
o UNICEF HIV‐Free Generation in Rwanda with UNICEF
o Gender Responsive Schools in Vietnam with UNTF
o Delaying Early Marriage in Niger with UNFPA
o Voices against Violence in 12 countries with UN WOMEN.
