Lionel Messi broke Cristiano Ronaldo's record for the most goals scored in La Liga by scoring 50 goals for Barcelona in the 2011-12 season.

The 25-year-old edged out fellow Liga star Cristiano Ronaldo, who hit the back of the net an impressive 46 times, in comparison to Messi's haul of 50.

"Before anything else I want to thank everyone who is here with me," Lionel Messi said. "A lot of people have come. Obviously this is a group award.

Lionel Messi, who also won the Golden Shoe award during the 2009-10 season reminisced about the time when he was a youngster at Barcelona's La Masia youth academy.
