The closing ceremony of the project entitled "Lebanese Youth as Messengers for Sustainability, an initiative to foster a culture of sustainability among the Lebanese children and youth, their families and the local communities" took place on 27 November at Riviera Hotel in the framework of the AFKAR III Programme. AFKAR is funded by the European Union and managed by the Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform (OMSAR),. This project was implemented by Makhzoumi Foundation in partnership with the Italian NGO Armadilla, the Lebanese NGO ALMEE, and the Greek NGO "Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development MIO-ECSDE".
The ceremony was attended by Mr Fouad Makhzoumi, the Founder and Mrs May Makhzoumi, the President of Makhzoumi Foundation, representatives from the Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform, as well as representatives from Ministries, municipalities, NGOs, public and private schools, embassies, and the media.
The project was implemented over two years (2014 - 2015), and included workshops for teachers, the preparation of an educational toolkit on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), seminars for stakeholders, environmental days for families in addition to a contest on the preparation of sketches on sustainable consumption and production targeting students of the intermediate level in public and private schools. The winning schools implemented small environmental projects for their communities (school gardens and environmental paintings) and a documentary about the project, which will be distributed to schools in Lebanon, Italy and Greece along with the educational toolkit on ESD.
