Due to logistics and delays in getting the necessary permits to cross the desert, Maxime Chaya has postponed expedition BRAK (Biking Rub' Al Khali)to December 2016. Chaya claims that it is not humanly possible to withstand the intense desert heat from April onward, at least not on bicycles.
He quotes "You can attempt to climb Everest during the monsoon season, but chances are you will not make it... not to the top and probably not backto base camp either! By the same token, you can attempt to cycle across the Empty Quarter during the summer months (April to August), but theextreme heat means you will not live throught that either...".
Maxime goes on to say: "In such extreme areas on our planet, it is nature that imposes its own timetable; and us humans can only comply."
As a 'full dress rehearsal' for BRAK, Chaya and his teammate Steve Holyoak (UK) will bike across the Sharqiya Sands in the Sultanate of Oman.Maxime will be sending regular updates from the desert via satellite and can be followed on BRAK's website: www.maximechaya.com/brak
The duo should be back home by April, inchalla!
