Muslim Women Fined for Wearing Burkinis on Cannes Beach

    25 august 2016

Earlier in August, the mayor of Cannes 'David Lisner'  issued an ordinance stating that Burkinis are forbidden in the city beaches until the end of August claiming that Burkinis are a "symbol of Islamic extremism" and are "not respectful of good morals and secularism."

The outfit which is popular with some Muslim women covers their entire body is intended to accord with Islamic traditions of modest dress.

Hence, fines have been imposed to 3 women aged between 29 and 57, for wearing Burkinis in the Southern French town of the city, and left after they were given warnings and told to leave the area. The fine was worth 11 Euros for each of the women.

In court, a judge said that the rule was legal under French law which prohibits people "invoking their religious beliefs to skirt common rules regulating relations between public authorities and private individuals."
