    CMC Hosts the 4th Annual Gastroenterology Symposium and Cancer Care Forum New Diagnostic and Management Approaches

    Clemenceau Medical Center, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine International, hosted the fourth Annual Gastroenterology Symposium on October 7, and the fourth Cancer Care Forum on October 14-15, 2016. The conferences gathered local and international physicians to explore the latest trends and discoveries to treat gastrointestinal diseases, liver and colorectal cancer, whereas lung, bladder, breast, prostate, and pancreatic carcinoma were conferred in the second.

    The first conference deliberated new approaches to diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tract, where the topics included the use of serologic markers for cancer detection and how they can be effectively used in clinical practice, the impact of endoscopic ultrasound on cancer staging and management and it is used in the management of chronic pain, as well as the role of Integrative Medicine in managing symptoms or common side effects from cancer therapy.

     

     

    The first symposium was enriched with the expertise of Dr. Anthony Kalloo, Professor of Medicine, and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine who discussed managing Gastrointestinal Obstruction and other complications in patients with metastatic cancer, Dr. Linda Lee, Associate Professor of Medicine, and Director of Endoscopy, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Director of Johns Hopkins Integrative Medicine and Digestive Center, who discussed enhancing cancer therapy using integrative medicine, Dr. James Hamilton, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Transplant Hepatology, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, who highlighted new molecular tests to identify common GI and liver cancers, Dr. Bashar Safar, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine who underscored recognizing and treating rectal cancer, Dr. IyadIssa, Chief of Gastroenterology, Rafic Hariri University Hospital who reviewed current and future modalities for colorectal cancer screening, and Dr. Ammar Ghazale, Director of Endoscopy, Clemenceau Medical Center Affiliated with Johns Hopkins International who featured the use of endoscopic ultrasound in chronic pain management.

     

     

     

    The two-day Cancer Care Forum that took place on October 14 discussed 3 main topics; Multidisciplinary Team Management and its impact on quality of care in Oncology, Immunotherapy and vaccines' new developments indications and outcomes, and new technologies and multimodalities applications and outcomes in Radiotherapy.

    The conference hosted the international speakers: Dr. Daniel A. Laheru, Co-Director, SkipViragh Center for Pancreas Cancer, JHH and Professor of Oncology, JHU, Dr. Russell K. Hales, Director, Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Program, JHH and Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences, JHU, and Dr. Hamdy Abdel Azim, MSc, Professor of Clinical Oncology, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University- Egypt.

     

     

    The forum covered the role of integrated nursing in the multidisciplinary care of cancer patients, the evolving role of multidisciplinary decision in Prostate, breast and Lung Carcinoma, tips, pitfalls and surgeon's perspective, the evolving role of vaccine in multiple solid tumors, and Immunotherapy revival and breakthroughs, as well as new Radiation techniques in pancreatic and liver carcinoma, evolving indications in early and advanced lung cancer, and fertility preservation in cancer patients.
