Birds Causing Threat to Planes in Beirut Airport

    13 january 2017

In August 2016, the Costa Brava landfill was set up near the Beirut Rafic Hariri Airport. Many people voiced out that it was a dangerous and most terrible location to put a landfill.

According to Kalam El Nas, the landfill is only 167 meters away from the airport while the distance required is 13 km.

Recently, it's being reported that birds are being attracted naturally to the landfill and causing hazard when planes are trying to land. Not only does the garbage attract birds but the high emissions of methane gases and heat can affect the engines nearby as well.  Lebanese authorities deployed bird-scaring devices and cars to prevent any collisions at low altitudes with the planes.

The government have installed bird scaring sound devices and sprayed bird repelling materials nearby so far. However, more serious actions must be taken in order to solve this hazardous problem.
