Interview of Elsn Lahoud with Beiruting.com

    28 april 2017

    1. How did you develop an interest in photography? How did it all start?

I have always had an interest in Art; in fact, I started drawing as soon as I learned how to use my coloring pens. Then I moved to painting later on, which also contributed to the development of my interest towards design and fashion, more specifically. In 2009, I received my first camera and I fell in love with photography. I found it much easier to design and see things with a photographic device, rather than start from scratch using pen and paper. I began experimenting by taking photos of family members, random objects, and people. Then, I discovered fashion and contemporary photography, which ultimately became my favorite photography genres.

    2. Whose work has influenced you most?

I consider artists such as David LaChapelle, Dean West, Jeff Koons and Sophie Calleas my main influencers.

    3. What do you want to say in your photographs? What do you want the people to see?

In my images, I tend to send the viewer to a surreal realm; I like to embed hidden messages and meanings in my photographs for the viewer to become part of what they see. I want people to be able to get in touch with the aesthetic approach of my photographs, but also the conceptual one.

    4. How do you work on improving yourself to take better pictures?

"Practice makes perfect"! Improving my techniques would be receiving feedback from professionals like my teachers and the people in the same field and the viewer as well.

    5. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?

I actually do not think there is something that I wish I knew back when I first started taking pictures! I believe photography is a continuous learning experience.

    6. Where is the road to photography taking you next? Any future plans?

Following my first solo exhibition, STEREOTYPED, which is held at Byblos Bank Headquarters, from 26 April, till 30 April 2017, I hope to pursue my career and become a surreal, contemporary fashion photographer. I want to stand out and have my very own special style and signature. I may do my masters abroad but not before I work on myself, portfolio and techniques. Concerning gallery work, I would love to receive opportunities just like the Byblos Bank Award for Photography, which would allow me to experiment even more in the world of Photographs for Galleries.
