A new invention will help doctors tracking microscale devices inside our bodies! Researchers from Caltech have created swallowable chips called ATOMS (Addressable Transmitters Operated as Magnetic Spins). The ATOMS are created to replace the MRI since it uses the same technology; it embodies the magnetic field sensor, antennas, wireless power source and a specific location circuit. Therefore, the chip is capable of transmitting its location to an external source which can be tracked by doctors and physicians.
Mikhail Shapiro is the Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering; Heritage Principal Investigator Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, Chemical Engineering, at Caltech. According to him, "You could have dozens of microscale devices traveling around the body taking measurements or intervening in disease. These devices can all be identical, but the ATOMS devices would allow you to know where they all are and talk to all of them at once."
