Lebanon Independence day is the most patriotic day on the calendar! People always get excited about this day! Here's the story behind this important day!
After the ottoman's occupation over Lebanon for 400 years, a French mandate started in 1923.
For a brief time in 1941, Vichy France controlled Lebanon. The revolutionaries supported by free French and British forces ended the rule. The French president Charles de Gaulle visited Lebanon in 1941 and promised the Lebanese leaders to end French rule off the Lebanese territories.
Yet, French forces stayed in control over Lebanon. In November 1943, the elected Lebanese leaders have amended the constitution in order to end the French mandate. Accordingly, the French arrested those rebels and exiled them to Rashaya Castle. Due to international pressure, France has released the prisoners and accepted the independence of Lebanon on November 22! And the French troops started leaving the country until the last French soldier left in 1946.
Ever since, the Lebanese people celebrate Independence day every year on November 22. And these celebrations vary according to the type of business.
