Demi Lovato has been hospitalized in Los Angeles for a possible drug overdose, TMZ and People report. While TMZ originally reported that law enforcement sources claimed Lovato had suffered from a heroin overdose, a source later told TMZ and People that heroin wasn't the cause of the overdose. "Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support," Lovato's representative said in a statement to Variety. "Some of the information being reported is incorrect and they respectfully ask for privacy and not speculation as her health and recovery is the most important thing right now."
Lovato's next scheduled concert was set to take place Thursday, July 26, in Atlantic City. Variety reports that her performance has been canceled.
Lovato has spoken openly about her struggles with substance abuse and addiction. She entered rehab at age 18 in October 2010 "for emotional and physical issues." She left rehab in 2011 and, for a time in 2013, lived in a "sober house" in Los Angeles.
In 2017, Lovato released the documentary Simply Complicated, in which she described her cocaine addiction. "I wasn't working my program. I wasn't ready to get sober," she said of her condition upon leaving rehab. "I was sneaking [drugs] on planes, sneaking it in bathrooms, sneaking it throughout the night. Nobody knew."
This past March, Lovato tweeted, "Just officially turned 6 years sober. So grateful for another year of joy, health and happiness. It IS possible. 🙏🏼."
On her recent single "Sober" she sings about symptoms of withdrawal ("Wake me when the shakes are gone/And the cold sweats disappear"), as well as possible relapse: "I'm so sorry, I'm not sober anymore."
