The planned creation of Lebanon's second international airport in Koleyat, Akkar, represents a significant step toward decentralizing air travel and boosting economic development in the northern region. Located at the **René Mouawad Air Base**, the project aims to relieve pressure on **Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport**, which currently serves as the country's only major air hub, and to provide an alternative gateway for both passenger and cargo transport.
Scheduled for completion in **2026**, the airport is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity, attracting investment, and creating much-needed job opportunities in Akkar and beyond. By facilitating easier access to northern Lebanon, the initiative is also set to support **tourism, trade, and local industries**, making Akkar a more attractive destination for businesses and visitors alike.
Earlier this week, **Prime Minister Nawaf Salam** visited the site, reaffirming the government's commitment to pushing the project forward. His visit signals strong political interest in ensuring that Koleyat Airport becomes a reality. However, the airport’s success will depend on several key factors, including **infrastructure development, security measures, and sustained political will** to see the project through to completion. If successfully executed, this ambitious endeavor could mark a new era for Lebanon’s aviation sector and economic landscape..
