President Joseph Aoun headed to New York aboard a direct Middle East Airlines (MEA) flight. MEA had operated direct flights between Beirut and New York until 1985, but service was suspended following the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 at Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport, which resulted in the killing of an American passenger, along with disruptions caused by the Lebanese civil war.
