4 Ways to be More Present in 2019

    07 january 2019

In between day dreaming, overworking, and pedaling at full speed towards where we want to be in 5-10 years, we often forget to focus on the more important things, like what's happening in the present. We text people that aren't with us, as we sit and barely pay any mind to those sitting directly across from us, we procrastinate when trying to complete a task by filling in tomorrow's to-do list, and we look back wishing we had paid more attention to what was happening in the moment. Here are nearly effortless adjustments you can make to be more present this year.

    Practice gratitude

It's okay to set goals and dream big but make sure to be grateful for what you already have and what's currently in front of you. You may not realize it or like to admit it, but everything that's happened to you, whether good or bad, has shaped you into the person you are today. Take a minute to create a list of the things you're grateful for and don't be afraid to have a little fun with it. My list includes family, my best friend, coffee, and even losing a job.

Only focus on what's in front of you

Stop dwelling on past mistakes, blunders and loss. They are over for a reason. What you need to focus on now is how to take advantage of the experiences and create a better life for yourself now. That also goes for giving too much power to the future. For example, if you're extremely excited for your vacation next month, you won't only overthink it at the expense of what's currently happening, but you'll also be setting yourself up for disappointment when the trip doesn't pan out exactly as you had imagined it would. It's normal to get a flood of ideas and distractions when trying to focus on something. But don't let them steal your attention. Simply write them down and come back to them when there's more time.

    Practice mindfulness

Anything from adult coloring to 15-minute morning meditation should do the trick. While meditating, don't focus on anything but your breathing. I know, it's not easy - when someone tells you not to do something, it's nearly impossible to do anything but that. With practice, you will learn to inhale solely through your nose, and exhale deeply through your mouth, without being preoccupied with unwanted thoughts about tomorrow's lunch or that one time you got stood up.

Take a break from social media

It may be nearly mid-January, but it's never too late to adopt the New Year's resolution to do a social media detox. In our day and age, it may be easier said than done, but decreasing the time you spend on social media and understanding the purpose behind your endless stalking sessions can tremendously shift your mood for the better.

Take a step back, slow down, inhale, exhale, and dominate the present. Carpe Diem!
