*Beirut Renames Airport Road in Honor of Ziad Rahbani*In a landmark decision adopted on August 5, 2025, the Lebanese Cabinet has renamed Hafez al‑Assad Avenue—the main route linking downtown Beirut to Rafic Hariri International Airport—to Ziad Rahbani Avenue, in tribute to the beloved Lebanese cultural icon. The announcement was made by Information Minister Paul Morcos following the Cabinet session yesterday
🚧 A Symbolic Shift
This renaming symbolizes more than just a change of signage—it marks a clear break from Lebanon’s past associations with Syrian rule. Lawmaker Mark Daou summed it up succinctly:
“Hafez al‑Assad into the dustbin of history, Ziad Rahbani is the name of the airport road forever!”
Lebanese actor Ziad Itani commented that the former Syrian regime was tied to “dark periods in Lebanese history, marked by massacres, abuses and assassinations”
Honoring Ziad Rahbani
Ziad Rahbani (1956–2025) died on July 26, 2025 at the age of 69. A composer, playwright, pianist, political commentator, and son of Fairouz and Assi Rahbani, he was a towering figure in modern Lebanese culture. His work—laced with satire, social critique, and deep creative expression—made him both a national treasure and a critical voice in Lebanese society
In recognition of his contribution, Rahbani was posthumously awarded the Order of the Cedar by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on July 28, 2025
The decision to name the airport avenue after him stands as a fitting public commemoration of his legacy.
A New Gateway for Lebanon
The avenue in question forms the emotional and visual gateway to Lebanon for travelers arriving by air. The government has been concurrently working on rehabilitating the route—improving infrastructure, lighting, signage, tunnel systems, and landscaping—to create a more dignified, welcoming entrance to Beirut — a “new face for Lebanon,” as some reports describe
By linking one of Lebanon’s most prominent cultural figures to this key corridor, the country is not just shaping a more modern transportation network—it is projecting a renewed sense of identity rooted in art, memory, and sovereignty.
✍️ Why It Matters
Cultural Pride: Ziad Rahbani’s name now represents creativity, critique, and independence—values that resonate widely in Lebanese society.
Historical Reclamation: Renaming a major public space symbolizes a conscious shift away from figures associated with authoritarianism.
Narrative Reframing: For visitors and returning diaspora alike, the experience of entering Beirut is now tied to Lebanon’s indigenous heritage—not external power.
In renaming this prominent artery, Lebanon sends a powerful message: it is choosing its own stories to honor. And in doing so, it honors one of its most eloquent storytellers.
