A major railway project taking shape across the region could eventually make it possible to travel by train from Lebanon toward Turkey and Saudi Arabia — reviving historic rail connections that once linked much of the Middle East.
Saudi Arabia and Turkey are currently working on plans for a major railway corridor connecting Istanbul with Makkah and Medina through Syria and Jordan. According to Saudi Transport Minister Saleh Al-Jasser, feasibility studies for the ambitious project are expected to be completed before the end of the year.
What makes the development particularly interesting for Lebanon is the possibility of a railway branch connecting Beirut with Damascus, potentially bringing Lebanon into a much larger regional rail network.
A Railway Route With History
Lebanon is no stranger to regional rail connections. The country once had an extensive railway network linking Beirut and Tripoli with Damascus and other destinations in the region.
Lebanon was also historically connected to the famous Hejaz Railway, a network that once stretched across parts of the Middle East and played an important role in transportation between the region’s major cities.
Today, efforts are underway to revive parts of this historic railway network. Turkey, Syria and Jordan have been discussing and working on railway restoration and connectivity projects, with the long-term vision of creating stronger rail links across the region.
What Could This Mean for Lebanon?
If the plans eventually move forward and the Lebanese connection becomes part of the wider network, Beirut could potentially become connected by rail to Damascus and, through the regional corridor, onward toward Turkey and the Arabian Peninsula.
Such a connection could have an impact far beyond passenger travel. A functioning regional railway could facilitate tourism, trade and the movement of goods while creating a new transportation link between countries that have historically been connected by rail.
Imagine being able to board a train in Beirut and, through a connected regional network, travel toward Istanbul or continue south toward Saudi Arabia.
Still Years Away
For now, this remains a long-term vision rather than an immediate travel option.
Feasibility studies are still underway, and rebuilding railway infrastructure across several countries would require major investment, coordination and years of construction.
But the idea itself represents a significant attempt to reconnect railway networks across the Middle East — and for Lebanon, it could eventually reopen a chapter of its railway history in a completely new way.
A train from Beirut to Turkey or Saudi Arabia may still sound like a dream today. But with regional railway plans moving forward, the possibility is once again being discussed. 🚆
