Nothing is more gratifying than the act of volunteer. In a world of greediness and horror, there remain selfless humans willing to promote goodness and improve the quality of life. On July 9, 1945, the Lebanese Red Cross was established not only to serve the public, but as an auxiliary team to the medical service Lebanese Army.
It is a non-profit organization and has joined the international Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in 1947; which currently has affiliates in 178 countries.
Led by volunteers, the Red Cross exclusive humanitarian mission is to protect lives and remain on guard for emergency situations. In 1964, the Red Cross initiated its first aid service with only 12 volunteers; a number which has amazingly grown to become 2700 first aiders as we speak, with 45 first aid centers and 4 operation rooms across the country. They remain alert and ready to serve 24/7 to ensure punctuality and urgent transport of the wounded all over the Lebanese territory. Their purpose grew beyond urgent matters to spread awareness through their medical and educational services. The Red Cross has centers to provide medical consultations for the sick with volunteered doctors. They created programs covering health education for pregnancy and breast-feeding to name a few, and campaigns meant to introduce early detections for cancer, cardiac and other diseases. They also provide the needed tools for the handicapped along with physiotherapy sessions. Note that the Red Cross was the first nursing institute in Lebanon and attempted to grant nursing diplomas for the youngsters, not to mention that it later provided first aid training programs under the slogan "Every Citizen is a First Aid."
In this shortened summary, we only said so little in an attempt to inspire so many. This is not addressed for potential volunteers, but for every individual who can take part in the success and continuity of this organization. It is our contribution that makes the difference; it is us who can make a change. Lebanon is on the edge when it comes to politics, international conflicts and many others; it is up to the people to struggle and maintain a humane society. Lebanese are known for their generosity, welcoming, and diversity, all we need is to invest more in each other, protect one another, and despite all difficulties, we stand tall. Never turn your back on your society so it won't turn its back on you! Whether rich or poor, different religion, sect or color, we unite for one purpose, the service of our community...
"The Fundamental Principles of the Lebanese Red Cross are Humanity - Impartiality - Neutrality - Independence - Voluntary Service - Unity - Universality."
