Meet Amany Khalil, Egypt's First Iron Woman

    07 march 2019

Egyptian athlete Amany Khalil is making history as Egypt's first 'Iron mom.'

Khalil completed the full Ironman Triathlon in 2016. Ironman is a series of long-distance triathlon races consisting of a 3.86km swim, a 180.25km bicycle ride and a 42.20km run (full marathon), raced in that order with no breaks.

Her sports journey began after she quit her job and got married.

"I wanted to do something for myself and I found a passion in running. I began training until I ran my first full marathon," she told Nogoum FM.

After her children enrolled in university, she began looking for another challenge, which is when she found Ironman, one of the greatest fitness challenges one can take.

"Training for Ironman took 10 months. Every day I had to swim for two hours, go to the gym then run or cycle for three hours," she recounted.

She completed the triathlon in 13 hours and 11 minutes.

    .

Until today, she continues to partake in sporting events around the world. Last February, she completed her 20th marathon at Egypt's first Pyramids Marathon in less than five hours.

Khalil hopes to inspire women around Egypt to take on sports, regardless of their age.

"You can accomplish such a dream at any moment in time. It has nothing to do with age. There's no right time," she said.
