Nicky Sarkis presents her painting "My Beloved city will heal
soon" in memory of the horrific Beirut Port explosion
One year after Beirut's horrific port explosion, nobody cares that
people died and the country struggles with trauma after trauma.
Huge twin blasts in the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020 left more
than 214 people dead, 7500 severely injured, 300000 people left
homeless immediately after the explosion, 70000 people who lost
their jobs due to the blast, 73000 damaged apartments, 9200
damaged buildings, 163 damaged schools and educational
centers, 106 damaged health care facilities, including six hospitals
and 20 clinics.
Nicky Sarkis, a Lebanese Bulgarian artist believes that Beirut will
heel soon and presents her painting "My Beloved city will heal
soon", to soothe the wounds of the victims.
Hand in hand, we will stand together
The source of the disaster was 2,7500 tones of ammonium nitrate,
a compound used as a fertiliser that is also a very powerful
explosive agent. It had been stored at the port with no
precautions for more than six years. The tragedy soon became a
symbol of Lebanon's years-long political, social and economic
crises. Despite promises of change, wounds left by the explosion
have yet to heal.
In solidarity with all the people who lost their lives, all the people
who were hurt and all the people who still suffer from the tragedy
that rocked the country in 4 August, Nicky Sarkis, a Lebanese
Bulgarian Architect, Painter & Author dedicated her painting "My
Beloved city will heal soon" for an auction that will take place
starting 4 August. All the proceeds from the auction will be directly
donated to Julia Medawar’s kids who were affected by the 4 th of
August 2020 Beirut Port explosion.
My Beloved city will heal soon
The painting of Nicky Sarkis “My Beloved city will heal soon”
represents Beirut after this horrible explosion, half of her yellow
face distorted, the yellow is the colour of wheat spikes, her hand
bleeding but still trying to raise again from aches in this beautiful
Mediterranean Blue Sea. The white represents the soul of the
victims protecting Beirut from above, because Beirut never dies….
The Lebanese people are warm and creative; you feel it when you
walk around Beirut. When a Lebanese person hosts you, they do so
generously; when they cook, they cook with love, when they
decorate, or dress, weave, sew, stitch, paint, glaze, draw, sing,
dance, love, laugh, fight, they do so genuinely and creatively.
“We are all Lebanese in love with Beirut our beautiful beloved city,
trying to avoid drowning, hand in hand we will stand together and
we will heal soon”, said Nicky Sarkis.
