Corruption in its various forms of illegal conduct and favoritism has been lingering for decades in the Lebanese society, fed by an administrative and citizenry laid back attitude. This June, Sakker El Dekkene took the matters to the street. In a series of brilliantly executed activities, this fresh NGO repositioned corruption as a pressing issue in need of immediate attention and action.
Sakker El Dekkene's team hit the streets of Lebanon, starting at its heart. After the Gemmayze sale in May, ambitious peddlers roamed the street of Mar Mikhael, on June 13th, selling their famous merchandise at the peak hour of afternoon traffic. They captured the interest of this residential and commercial neighborhood's public, as they engaged with them in discussions while offering driving licenses, diplomas, weapon permits and other official documents. Through this intriguing initiative, the street activity succeeded in raising awareness and mobilizing support against corruption. Sakker El Dekkene peddlers pursued their journey as they headed to Saida on the 20th of June where, for three consecutive days, they roved the city souks and the corniche, interacting with the public, using selling carts that offered the NGO's prominent products. Sakker El Dekkene volunteers distributed flyers, invited the public to report bribery using iPads and initiated discussions on corrupt conduct.
Sakker El Dekkene has just started and will soon hit the streets again. Beware as your neighborhood might be the next target of Dekkenet El Balad and its collection of bizarre merchandise.
