The 72-year-old suffered a "huge gash" to his head in the crash.  He remains in hospital where his condition is said to be "stable".

Harrison Ford suffered serious head injuries when the plane he was piloting crashed yesterday after engine failure.

The actor, 72, nose-dived on to a golf course near Santa Monica airport in California in the single-seater 1930 Ryan PT22.

A crash witness said: "He was talking a little and there was a huge gash on his head."

The Star Wars and Indiana Jones star was said to be stable in hospital last night.

Ford's plane - a 1930 Ryan PT 22 - came down on Penmar Golf Course near Santa Monica Airport, California.
