A schoolboy has received hundreds of birthday cards from all over the world after his mother issued a heartbreaking plea, telling people how her child “cries himself to sleep” as he has no friends.
Molly Mole has been left overwhelmed by the level of support she and her 11-year-old son Roman have received following a Facebook post that went viral on April 20.
In the post, Mrs Mole revealed how Roman was an “adorable boy with difficulties”, and that he had only had one party invitation in seven years of primary school.
She wrote: "Sometimes he sits crying asking if he will get a call to invite him to a classmate’s party, and we have to explain that he won’t.
"I have even rung friends up and asked if I can pay the party fee to take Roman along and keep an eye on him – but no, this has not worked either.”
The heartbroken mother added that her son had told her it was pointless to invite people to a party for his birthday today, but then asked mothers of children in the school to see if their offspring could wish him well for his special day.
The post quickly went viral and over the next few days, Roman and Mrs Mole were stunned when hundreds of cards, gifts and cakes were delivered - some from as far away as Australian and New Zealand.
She told the BBC: "Within 12 hours my post had been shared around the world from friends to their friends and beyond," she said.
"The moment I realised it had gone global was when someone in Uganda messaged me and asked if they could send my son Roman a birthday card.
"It's been amazing, I'm overwhelmed with people's kindness.”
Roman woke today, his 11th birthday, and was allowed to open his cards, presents and enjoy a very special celebration.
