General Directorate of Security issued a statement that working through the standards by the International Civil Aviation Organization, Lebanese citizens who hold the Lebanese passport should replace them with new passports starting 10/01/2016.
So everyone who is holding a hand written passport, should apply for a new one. In addition to that, all passports that include kids or under-aged citizens, will be cancelled, and newer passports will be issued separately for them.
President of the Civil Aviation Mohammad Chehab El Dine stated about not accepting renewed hand written passports , pointing to" the need to read the passport automatically, to protect against fraud first and for all security aspects. He predicted that it’s potential that all Lebanese passports will become biometric by 2017.
While the head of the Office of Media Affairs in the Public Security Brigadier General Nabil pointed out that there will be no withdrawal of passports from departing citizens who have not replaced their passports, he said he will pull out all the handwritten passports either renewed or those that include escorts.
