Keep your kidneys moving with Bellevue Medical Center

    09 march 2016

In accordance with World Kidney Day (March 10th), BMC organized a rich and festive awareness campaign named "Keep Your Kidneys Moving!". The campaign was initiated on March 8th and continues to March 11th in the presence of media, social influencers and BMC staff.

The campaign's agenda includes energy-packed Zumba and Body Toning classes, in collaboration with Grand Hills Hotel & Spa. Furthermore, an interactive booth was set up at BMC in collaboration with the Lebanese Society of Nephrology & Hypertension that provided free blood pressure testing, and educational tips from physicians and other health professionals. In addition, a mass educational initiative was launched on social media to further promote the objectives of the campaign.

Worldwide, 1 in every 10 people have kidney damage, mostly unknowingly. The World Health Organization (WHO) now recognizes chronic kidney disease (CKD) as an issue of concern with numbers predicted to increase by 17% over the next decade. This calls to attention key risk factors involved, prevention, and early detection of the illness.

Shedding light on chronic kidney disease, a problem that affects 1 in every 5 men, and 1 in every 4 women aged 65-74, Dr Chadia Beaini, nephrologist in charge of the Dialysis Center at Bellevue Medical Center (BMC) said: "staying fit and conducting regular exercise are good ways to take care of our kidneys, whether we're at risk or not. Taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle clearly helps to reduce risk, and early detection and treatment can slow or prevent the progression of kidney disease. Because once it hits, it's already too late."

Through raising awareness, BMC looks to promote the right decisions to take early in life which would lessen the burdens of CKD related disability and death.
