Back in 2013, Hugh Jackman was in the process of filming X-Men: Days of Future Past, when a makeup artist noticed blood on Jackman’s nose. He was prompted by his wife Deborra-Lee Furness to get the skin condition checked out. It turned out to be more than just a simple mole, and Jackman was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a non-melanoma form of skin cancer. Since that diagnosis, the Australian actor has had five operations to remove skin cancers.

The cancer hasn’t stopped Jackman from continuing his acting career; apart from his defining role as Logan in X-Men, as well as the standalone Wolverine movies, he’s also starred in the Prestige, Van Helsing and 2012’s Les Miserables, which earned him his first Oscar nomination for best actor.
This summer, Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his role as Wolverine for the final time in Logan, but he’ll be glad that filming has already wrapped on the X-Men spin-off.
Hugh Jackman was born in Sydney, Australia, and is no stranger to sun, surf and sand; but his outdoor activities might have come back to bite him somewhat. In an Instagram post to his nearly 10 million followers, Hugh Jackman revealed he’d had his sixth carcinoma removed, showing off a bandage across his nose. Jackman said it “looks worse with the dressing on than off”.

In his Instagram post, Hugh Jackman thanks the “amazing doctors” for his “frequent body checks”, and the experience of skin cancer has led the 48-year-old to implore his followers to take better care of themselves when out in the sun, with his hashtag #wearsunscreen.[viralthread]
