The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched today a civil society advocacy grants program under the Building Alliances for Local Advancement, Development and Investment -Capacity Building(BALADI CAP) project. The event was held in the presence of USAID Lebanon Program Office Director Jim Harmon and representatives from participating civil society organizations and municipalities. The $15 million BALADI CAP project provides tailored technical assistance to municipalities and civil society organizations to strengthen their internal systems and improve their business operations. The project also supports networks of local civil society organizations to advocate for issues of public interest.
The civil society advocacy grants launched today are an important part of the BALADI CAP project. The grants will promote citizen participation in public affairs, the creation of platforms for informed public debate and the competition of ideas. Under this program, 13 organizations will implement projects that support human rights, good governance and accountability, environmental preservation and solid waste management.
In his remarks, Harmon stated that the United States Government is a strong supporter of Lebanese civil society, as well as an advocate of human rights. He emphasized the importance of promoting good governance within civic organizations to pave the way for social change and a more stable and prosperous Lebanon.
