    Bari conference shines a spotlight on Lebanese cultural model Alice Eddé shares safeguarding hopes

    Alice Eddé,founder of the NGO "Friends of BiladJbeil" and the President of the Beirut International Film Festival, was recently invited to share her ideas with like minds from the Mediterranean region at a conference, which took place in May in the delightful setting of the Palazzo Verrane, Old Bari, Italy.

     

    Organised by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies [CIHEAM], the eventbrought together 150 participants to discuss how best to harmonise religious, social and cultural differences at a national and regional level.

     

     

    The conference explored the concept of the Mediterranean as "a bridge, rather than a wall of water", holding the potential to unite the countries surrounding it in challenging times.

     

    Lebanon took the spotlight at proceedings and the prominent Lebanese author, journalist and women's rights activist Joumana Haddad also participated at the conference.

     

    In her speech, Mrs.Eddé, highlighted the concentration of nature, beauty and talent that Lebanon showcases, while also reaffirming the importance of investing in the country's youth.

     

    "I am passionate about what I do and am determined in my efforts to safeguard this city and country for future generations," she told the audience.

     

    A U.S. citizen by birth, Alice Eddé has lived and worked in Lebanon for over 40 years, during which time she has become synonymous with promoting economic sustainability and social change in the country's rural regions through her many projects in and around Byblos. These involve supporting talented local artisans and small enterprises, the Lebanese design community, women's empowerment, and boosting environmental initiatives.

     

    The CIHEAM conference was hosted by its director Maurizio Raeli, vice president Gianni Bonini, and general secretary Cosimo Lacirignola. Roula Khadra, agronomy engineer and researcher specialising in Mediterranean water issues, moderated the discussion.

     

    The CIHEAM is an intergovernmental organisation with representatives from 13 member states taking in both shores of the Mediterranean. It works towards improving sustainable agriculture and fisheries to help ensure food and nutrition security, while developing rural and coastal territories.
