Under the Patronage of the British Embassy, the exhibition organized by TEACH A CHILD from Sep 28th till 30th at Le Yacht Club Gallery, Zaytouna Bay, Beirut, featured some 50 oil paintings by British artist Tom Young. The paintings were a selection of his best work over the past five years in Beirut, featuring work inspired by his projects to transform old mansions Villa Paradiso, The Rose House and Al Zaher. He also exhibited new paintings about the contemporary city of Beirut, and previously unseen work made in the infamous Holiday Inn- a building, which can be seen from the exhibition venue.
He explores themes of transience, memory, transformation and contradiction through a variety of styles from impressionism, surrealism, symbolism and abstraction. Whilst expressing a nostalgic yearning for the past and the drama of modern urban development, he creates a transcendent feeling of light and space.
Young combines his painting practice and architectural activism with helping disadvantaged children- often working with children from orphanages and schools to create collective projects and exhibitions. So this collaboration with TEACH A CHILD is a natural and appropriate development: TEACH A CHILD is a non-profit organization that provides financial support to children across Lebanon to help them enroll in public schools, regardless of their gender, religion, location or performance.
Both the artist and the NGO believe that we must act to improve opportunities for children in Lebanon to ensure a better future for all of us.
Young commented: "I'm thrilled that this collaboration will allow me to support the important work that TEACH A CHILD undertakes across Lebanon". Teach a Child members organizing the exhibition are excited to provide both their supporters and lovers of Young's work the opportunity to acquire the artist's paintings while contributing to educating the least fortunate children of Lebanon.
A percentage of sales will go to fund TEACH A CHILD's work to support the education of children in need.
