Michael Schumacher is "sending signals from his distant world", according to a German media report.
Family are reportedly hoping for a medical miracle, and believe they are receiving some form of communication from the F1 racing great.
German magazine Brunte quoted an unnamed source as saying: "Corinna and the children [Mick, 18 and Gina, 20] hope to this day that a medical miracle happens".
Schumacher suffered head injuries in a ski accident in December 2013. The seven-time world champion was put in a medically induced coma for six months after the accident and has a large medical team working around him at his estate in Geneva, Switzerland.
Since the head injury he has been unable to speak or walk.
His condition has been the subject of much public interest, though the Schumacher team continue to keep his health private.
Manager Sabine Kehm has made no apologies for the tough stance on refusing to go public with his condition.
"Michael has always been very protective of his privacy, even during the most successful times of his career," she said a year ago.
"He has always made sure there is a clear and distinct line between his public persona and his private one."
