Prince George and Princess Charlotte's younger sibling's name has been announced.
Kensington Palace announced Friday that the son born to Kate Middleton and Prince William on April 23 will be named Louis Arthur Charles, and will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge. The announcement came several days after the baby arrived on Monday morning, at 11:01 A.M., weighing in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces. He immediately became fifth in line to the throne, behind Prince Charles, his father Prince William, and his two older siblings.
Prior to the announcement, oddsmakers had the favorites as Albert and Arthur, with Philip having an outside chance. Prince Charles and Prince William both have Arthur as a middle name, though it hasn't been used as a first name in the royal family in some time. Louis is part of Prince George's name as well, and was the name of Prince Philip's maternal grandfather, Prince Louis Mountbatten, who was Prince Philip's closest family lineage to England before he married the Queen. (He adopted the surname Mountbatten when he joined the British royal family.) The fact that Louis is part of Prince George's name had some royal watchers believing it was unlikely to be chosen. Charles is, of course, the name of the new baby's grandfather, and the next king of England.
